An Explore Class. Rebecca Clarke’s great Viola Sonata is significant for its authorship by one of the first great violists and one of the first women to play in a professional orchestra. Full of gorgeous melodies and rich harmonies, the work showcases her own mastery of the viola’s expressive capabilities. Combining lush romanticism with impressionistic touches the sonata remains a gem of early 20th-century chamber music.
